End-of-life tyres

It is estimated that in Catalonia approximately 40,000 tons of end-of-life tyres are generated every year.

The end-of-life tyre (hereinafter ELT) has European Waste Catalogue (EWC) code 160103 and is classified as non-hazardous waste. As waste, tyres have two basic origins:

    1) Replacement tyre: provided to replace the used tyres on a vehicle.
    2) Tyre generated in the process of dismantling an end-of-life vehicle.

Royal Decree 1619/2005 of 30th December on the management of end-of-life tyres attributes the basic responsibility for proper management of ELTs to those in charge of placing them on the national tyre market, whether they be manufacturers, importers or purchasers in another EU state. It has also prohibited the elimination of cut-up tyres in controlled landfills since July 2006.

To comply with this Royal Decree, the producers have grouped together into two integrated management systems: Signus Ecovalor, S.L. and Tratamiento de Neumáticos Usados, S.L. (TNU).
